The Governing Board believes that appropriate dress and grooming contribute to a productive learning environment. The Board expects students to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and to wear clothes that are suitable for the school activities in which they participate. Students’ clothing may no present a health hazard or a distraction which would interfere with the educational process.

All students are expected to adhere to the following:

  • Jeans are not to be worn too tight or too baggy.

  • Dresses and skirts should not be worn too long or short. Skirts and dresses must be a maximum of four inches from the top of the knee.

  • Long earrings should not be worn.

  • No bare midriffs, see-through blouses; mesh tops, back-less tops or strapless blouses are permitted.

  • Shorts, other than cutoffs, may be worn during WARM WEATHER. (Inseam must be a minimum of 4 inches).

  • SHOES must be worn at all times.

  • Flip-flops are not permitted.

  • Pajamas may be worn only on designated special days (pajama day).

  • Hats or caps are not to be worn inside school facilities. They are to be worn properly and cannot depict suggestive, language, pictures, or inappropriate materials.

  • Belts should be threaded through the belt loops. No red or blue web belts are allowed.

  • No shirts/blouses or coats/jackets are to worn to school with suggestive language or pictures.

  • No GANG related clothing items will be allowed at school or school sponsored events.

  • Dangerous Attire is not permitted (chains, wallet chains, spikes, studs, etc.)

  • No tube tops, tank tops, halter-tops or spaghetti straps tops allowed.

  • Baggy pants are NOT allowed here at Sunnyside. Baggy is defined when the two pant side seams of an individual garment are brought to the front of the mid-thigh and the side seams touch.

  • No crude or vulgar printing or pictures depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco or those that sexually suggestive are allowed.

  • Any gang related materials, including but limited to apparel and jewelry is prohibited.

  • All pants, shorts, or coveralls must be fitted to be worn at the waist. “Waist” is defined as the area at or above the top of the hips. NO underwear is to be showing. Coveralls must be clipped properly.

  • Any apparel, jewelry, or accessory, which creates a potential safety hazard to the student or others, is not allowed.


  • First Violation: Parent/guardian will be notified; student will change into acceptable garments.

  • Second Violation: Parent/guardian notification. Behavior referral will be issued.

  • Third Violation: Suspension for Remainder of Day.

  • Fourth Violation: Parent/Guardian and student will be referred to the District Governing Board.


Students at Sunnyside Union Elementary School have both rights and responsibilities. It is the obligation of the school district to protect those rights and insist upon those responsibilities.

The purpose of this conduct code is to ensure that all students understand their rights and responsibilities, the consequences of violations of school rules and the procedures for dealing with violations.


All students have the responsibility to:

  1. Protect the Rights of Others to Study and Learn: An individual may decide not to take advantage of that opportunity. However, no one has the right to interfere with the education of others.

  2. Be on Time for Class.

  3. Attend School Daily Unless Ill or Legally Excused.

  4. Obey School Rules: Rules are designed to allow a school to meet its obligations to educate students. 

  5. Complete All In-Class and Homework Assignments, even when suspended.

  6. Come to Class with Necessary Books and Materials.

Getting an education requires more than being in class, just as keeping a job requires more than showing up for work.


It should be understood that the list of offenses, which follows, includes only the most common infractions of school rules. Because other forms of misbehavior are not listed does not mean they will be permitted. California State Law permits disciplinary actions, including suspension, exclusions and expulsion for disrupting the school and the performance of its duties.

  1. Causing Serious Physical Injury to Another Person

    1. First Offense: Report student to law enforcement agency; an recommend student for expulsion.

  2. Fighting

    1. First Offense: Both parties suspended (minimum of remainder of day); or one to three days.

    2. Second Offense: Expulsion for the remainder of the semester for the person who started the fight; and, 5 days suspension for the other student.

  3. Classroom Disturbance

    1. First Offense: Warning by teacher, contact parent; and/or suspend student for the remainder of the day or up to 3 days.

    2. Second Offense: Parent sits with student in class for one week.

    3. Continued disturbance will result in the student being recommended for expulsion for the remainder of the semester.

  4. Defiance of Authority

    1. First Offense: Three to five days suspension.

    2. Second Offense: Recommend for expulsion for the remainder of the semester.

  5. Threats, Insults, and Verbal Abuse of School Personnel.

    1. First Offense: One to three days suspension, and apologize to offended person.

    2. Second Offense: Recommend for expulsion for remainder of semester.

  6. Profanity, Vulgarity, Pornography and Obscenity.

    1. First Offense: Three to five days suspension.

    2. Second Offense: Recommend expulsion for remainder of semester.

  7. Damage to School or Private Property. (Payment will be made for damage that occurs.)

    1. First Offense: Consider three to five days suspension; and, refer to law enforcement depending on severity.

    2. Second Offense: Report to law enforcement; and, recommend expulsion for the remainder of the semester.

  8. Bus Conduct

    1. First Offense: Parent contact/conference; and, five days suspension of transportation privileges.

    2. Second Offense: Denial of bus privileges.

  9. Possession and/or use of firearms, knives, explosives, or other dangerous objects or offensive odors.

    1. Any Offense: Immediate confiscation. Report to law enforcement agency. Recommend expulsion.

  10. The possession, use, under the influence, sale or otherwise furnishing of any controlled substance.

    1. Any Offense: Immediate confiscation of substance. Contact law enforcement. Recommend expulsion.

In addition, California law states that students in grades 4 through 8, may be suspended or recommended for expulsion for the following acts:

  1. Participated in an act of hate violence.

  2. Intentionally engaged in harassment, threat or intimidation directed against other students.

  3. Committed sexual harassment, assault, or battery.

  4. Possessed an imitation firearm.
